What Causes Sharp Pain In Right Abdomen Above The Rib Cage?

default
Posted on Thu, 8 May 2014
Question: I am 70 years old and have developed a strange deep pain in my right abdomen just above my rib cage and maybe also to the right of my stomach. It seems to come and go but when it comes it is deep and powerful . It does not seem to respond too much to advil or tylenol but does go away from time to time. I can press on my stomach right below my ribs and it has high pain when i do that. I had my semi annual blood test 10 weeks ago and it was almost perfect but i am getting very worried about this pain. What are the options.??? As i push on my stomach i can feel something just below my rib cage on the right side deep in the tissue that seems to be possibly inflamed or tender. Inflamed and TENDER

Brief Answer: can be due to gall stones Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for writing to HCM. The area where you are having pain is the liver and gall bladder area. And your pain description is very similar to that of a patient with gall stones and cholecystitis. In my opinion, you should see a surgeon for a physical examination and get an ultrasound of your abdomen to look for the stones. Also get a complete blood count and your liver profile test repeated as things may change in over 10 weeks, especially when you have such symptoms. Further management will depend upon the above tests results. Hope i have been helpful. Regards Dr. Ashish Verma
