What Causes Severe Weakness, Cold Intolerance, Night Sweats And Lightheadedness?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 May 2016
Question: hi, my mum had a long term hospital admission and after being back she is extremely weak and cold intolerant; even going to a different room would need to feeling her shivery and ultimately to temperature, This is mostly at night , irregularly, and she also have night sweats. But her main concern is the weakness with low appetite and with consequent less eating. She can't eat much as this would lead to epigastric pain. Further symptoms are lightheadedness and some times feeling of seeing long insects- which has improved now.
She is extremely afraid of having going back to hospital, as she would start crying just hearing the world of doctor or hospital. Which is not usual for her. Just wondering what is the best thing to give her in order to reduce her weakness and build her up. Any treatments in alternative medicine are also welcome.

Thanks in advance

Brief Answer:
Anxiety.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
It seems your mother is suffering from Anxiety secondary to long illness and hospital stay.
Moreover she is on steroids which on itself can cause Psychosis.
Weakness can be due to low Hemoglobin, Calcium , Protein Deficiency following long hospital stay. Moreover her Anxiety and fear can itself precipitate the feeling of weakness.
I would advice you in such case to seek help of Psychiatric who would give her anti anxiety drugs like Etizolam for short course.
You may any good multivitamin for the purpose of generalized weakness.
I hope it helps you.
If you have any further query, please ask me.

Brief Answer:
Start with Nephrocaps.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, You may start her with a famous multivitamin for Kidney patients available as Capsule Nephrocaps twice daily.
Such cold intolerance could be due to Urinary tract infection, a Thyroid illness if all normal could be a part of her Anxiety.
Start measuring her temperature using a thermometer.
Hallucinations are part of Anxiety. Once she states taking good sleep, she would definitely feel fine.
Discuss with your doctor to taper and stop steroids as soon as possible so that if hallucinations or depression is all because of steroids then it would stop.
If you have any further query, please ask me.

Brief Answer:
Supportive care

Detailed Answer:
Hi, i understand your pain for your mother. Such complaints are frequently seen after discharge from hospital, that too after long stay.
The best way out is to start her with liquid and semi solid diet and when she is able to tolerate, she can be given solid diet.
You can discuss with your doctor to prescribe her Xylocaine Liquid Viscus that can be given 15-20 minutes prior to meals and would give her symptomatic relief from burning.
A combination of Pantoprazole and Levosulpride should be added along with Digene syrup.
Try to give her milk with protein powder (if otherwise not contraindicated), and a good multivitamin with zinc to be sure she is not deficient in nutrients.
I would highly recommend you to get her 25, Hydroxy Vitamin D levels and Calcium levels with Albumin.
If that is low, she should be given supplements for that purpose. This would help her in regaining her bone health and she would be able to walk.
Physiotherapy is an extremely important part of this care.
I hope you find this information helpful.
Please feel comfortable to ask me, if you have any further queries.
Stay Healthy.
