What Causes Severe Swelling In The Leg After Arthroscopic Knee Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 18 Sep 2017
Question: I had arthroscopic (right) knee surgery 3 months ago, but continue to experience swelling from knee-to-toes and the area just behind my knee still feels tender, as if bruised. Should I be worried about possible blood clot issues resulting from the tourniquet applied during the procedure on May 18, 2017?

Thank you so much. I'll act quickly on this advice. Regards, -- XXXX

Brief Answer:
Rule out DVT / Infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic for your health

Torniquet applied 3 months ago will not cause blood clot now. However, the limited movement following surgery can trigger a deep vein thrombosis (which is blood clot in deep veins of leg).Another possibility is infection of skin/cellulitis.The risk of infection is high if your are diabetic. Doppler scan can differentiate whether it is a blood clot/infection.
Both these conditions require immediate medical attention to avoid complications .Please be advised to follow up with the urgent care as soon as possible.
