What Causes Severe Pain In The Lower Left Back?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Sep 2017
Question:
8/8/2017
My wife has severe pain in her lower left side, in-between her hip and rib cage. She can’t lift her arms over her head because of the pain it causes. It hurts her when she sits or lays down in certain positions. She also found out that when she bends her neck downwards it triggers the pain in her lower side (where she has been having the pain at)
This just started yesterday and she has been taken Aleve and been putting Aspercreme on it overnight.
What do you think this would be ?
Thank you, XXXXXXX

WebMD Doctors response
Brief Answer:
Probably a strained muscle!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

I have reviewed this information fully. This is most likely a strained muscle.
The mechanical nature of the pain is typical. I will suggest that she gets good pain medications: 400mg of Ibuprofen every 8hours and 650mg of Tylenol every 8hours after food. Using both together ensures greater and better pain control. She will also need some rest for the time being to allow the muscles to recover fully.

If this pain persists/no improvement within next 3 days, I'd suggest that she get evaluated at the hospital. At that time, the decision to see a physical therapist would also be made.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.
Regards

My follow up Question:

My wife’s pain in her lower right side has not subsided. I wrote into WebMD as well as went to see a doctor on Wednesday and they both said the same thing, that she should try muscle relaxants and painkillers for a couple days to see if it subsides, so we did so
and here it is Friday and nothing has changed. The doctor that we went to see also did a urine sample to see if there is blood in her urine for possible kidney stone, there was no blood in her urine so she ruled that out.
Is it still possible to have a kidney stone without blood in the urine?
We are not sure what road to take at this point, do I take her to see a chiropractor or to the hospital to run some tests?
One final note when she bends her head downwards and triggers the pain in her right side. That’s why I thought of the chiropractor.
