What Causes Severe Pain In Foot?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: Hi - my right foot started hurting in November - but over the last couple of weeks it has gotten really bad. The outside of my ankle and top of the foot near the ankle are killing me. They hurt really bad when I am sitting and have my legs extended out (which makes sleeping not so good). If I flex the foot it feels better - I have full range of motion. I need some relief or an idea of what it may be because I have been writhing in pain for the last two hours.

Brief Answer:
ankle osteoarthritis/ligament injury

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mam!

Welcome to HealthcareMagic!

I understand your concern.Your symptoms sound like ankle osteoarthritis. The pain in this disease keeps increasing and you do not get relief even after taking rest.

A proper physical examination,Xray and CT scan of ankle would help in diagnosing. You can try wrapping a crepe bandage around the sore area and apply hot compress to get some relief.

Weight control and physical therapy would be of help too. Try doing light foot exercises and lose weight if your are overweight.

Hope this helps.Feel free to ask more.

Thank you for your time. I have absolutely no swelling and nothing looks any different on the sore foot from the other foot. Also sometimes it will feel like my ankle "gives out" on me. I remember exactly when it happened - I was walking back from our barn to our house and all of sudden it felt like it "gave out" on me and from then on it has been like this. Except over the last few days it just seems extremely painful when I am sitting for the evening with my feet on a ottoman. I have tried heat and it does not work either

Brief Answer:
chances of stress fracture

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for writing back!

As per your history, there are quite strong chances of it being stress fracture.

I would strongly suggest you to see an orthopedician and go for Xray ankle or CAT ankle. It will definitely help in yielding a confirm diagnosis.

Hope this helps. If you have no further queries, please rate this answer and close this discussion.

Thank you
