Question: We think my husband has polymyalgia rheumatica. Waiting to see rheumatologist in 2 weeks time. Onset was very sudden and very severe pain and stiffening. He cannot close his fists since about 4 days, is this also a known symptom of pmr?

Brief Answer:
Yes it can be a symptom.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that yes there exists a possibilty that the wrist and hand stiffness exists because of PMR . Although it is notorious to affect shoulder and pelvic girdle muscles more but other joints can also be affected .

You need to get his ESR , RF , Anti CCP antibody done to see whats going on as Rheumatoid arthritis remains the closest differential .I am sure your rheumatologist will take care of it.Any other concerns please feel free to ask.

Take care.

Yes he has the neck, shoulders, upper arms, and thighs issues and also the back of the knees, but the hands issue started 2 to 3 weeks after other symptoms. His fingers are tingling as well as that He cannot clench his fist.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Thanks for reverting back.

PMR is a clinical diagnosis , generally patients are diagnosed by their specific symptoms and early morning stiffness whereas in other types of arthritis swelling remains a major complaint . But still the blood tests guide us , so as and when the reports are available you can send them to me and then we can send you the interpretation to help you out and guide you further about the options.
