What Causes Severe Knee Pain After Knee Replacement Surgery?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Mar 2017
Question: I still have knee pain in one knee one year after replacement surgery. I had both knees replaced, but the other one is fine. It mostly affects me after walking for about 15 minutes. It feels somewhat unstable, and hurts all around the joint.

Brief Answer:
Implant loosening

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for the query

This could be loosening of the implant due to infection or weak fixation due to disordered dynamics.

I suggest you get an Xray and PET scan to look for the same.

Use a short, hinged knee brace while walking.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

You suggest the possibility of implant loosening, but I just had an x-ray, which the surgeon said looked fine. Wouldn't this show that? Also, I only had the surgery one year ago. Would a PET scan or an MRI show whether implant loosening is the case? While an x-ray would not?

Brief Answer:
Physiotherapy

Detailed Answer:
Early changes which cannot be found in an Xray will be seen on a PET scan. However if your Doctor does not suspect loosening, then you may benefit from physiotherapy for strengthening the Quadriceps muscle.
