What Causes Severe Itching On The Outer Ear Despite Using Triamcinolone Acetonide Ointment?

Question: 6 wks. ago my rt. outer ear (right by my temple) itched a lot and the inside of my ear felt like it was full of hair (as though I never trimmed it in my life. 67yrs.) but there was none there. If I was very still (reading, watching TV) it would feel like it was pulsating, like I could feel hair growing. This feeling would come and go throughout the day. I used some OTC anti itch cream for 2 wks. but it didn't help. I went to my family Dr. and she prescribed Triamcinolone Acetonide ointment. I used it for 2 weeks. Nothing! Went to an ENT. He couldn't find anything wrong and prescribed the same medicine but in liquid ear drop form. 2 wks. later and no relief.
The itching has gotten better but the periodic feeling of hair growth in my ear is still there. The prescribed medication doesn't work any better than OTC.
When the pulsating hair feeling starts, opening my mouth as far as I can, stops the feeling temporarily. It starts up again soon after I close my jaw all the way.
It's not there in the morning, (I do tend to sleep with my mouth open.) but gets worse as the day wears on.
It's driving me nuts. Help!

Brief Answer:
Possible fungal infection with ear wax of external ear.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The possibility of ear wax and fungal infection in the external ear is very high in your case.

It's advisable to consider oral antifungal agents.

Likewise, it's important to consider an otoscopic examination of the ear for direct visualization.

Further management if any is largely based on otoscope findings.

Hope I have answered your query.
