Question: my 15 year old daughter has had bad headaches, nose bleeds, nausea and seizure like episodes for 3 years and we finally got an MRI where they have discovered a 15 mm pineal cyst. Could the cyst cause all the symptoms that she has been experiencing?

Brief Answer:
Large pineal cysts can cause symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Pineal cysts are being lesions of pineal gland and when small (around 5 mm), usually don't cause any symptoms.

Larger cysts can cause symptoms such vision problems because of compression of vision pathways and increased intracranial pressure ( headaches, nausea, seizures ) because of cerebrospinal fluid pathways narrowing ( obstructive hydrocephalus ).

In your doughter's case most probably the cyst is causing those symptoms.

Hydrocephalus should be assessed further by funduscopic examination to evaluate papilledema and reevaluation of MRI.

If confirmed hydrocephalus should be treated surgically by shunting cerebrospinal fluid.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best regards.
