default
Posted on Fri, 22 Jul 2016
Question: I normally have lots and lots of energy and I just cannot stay awake. I sleep all night, I get up two hours to get to our nap again for two hours another two hour nap and then to bed early. I have no medications I normally take. I have a sore throat with drainage and stopped up ears but those are my only physical symptoms outside of my extreme fatigue

OSA, Thyroid hormone imbalances, anemia

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.

Fatigue can be associated with many disorders including a flu.
If you have had it for more than 2 weeks without an obvious cause (like illness), I would like to primarily rule out obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), thyroid hormone imbalances & anemia.

Would you please clarify a few things for me?
- when did you attain menopause?
- any vaginal bleed after that?
-any other medical issues? Medications?
-what is your height and weight?
-has anyone noticed if you snore?

I recommend :
- a physician consult
-blood tests (complete blood count, peripheral smear, TSH, free T3, free T4, kidney & liver function tests)
-sleep study to check for sleep apnea

Based on the above test results and clinical findings, further investigation (if required) and a treatment plan will be formulated.

The sleep study will involve an overnight stay at the study center.

In the meantime, stay well hydrated, take proper rest. Try to maintain routine sleep times as much as possible.

Try to take a stroll (if you feel upto it) outdoors.
Avoid sunlight between 10am and 4pm but do get some sunlight in the early morning.

If you have any giddiness, chest discomfort, breathing difficulty, visit the ER right away. Don't drive and take someone along.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Wish you good health.
Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
