What Causes Severe Bloating, Lower Abdomen Pain And Nausea While On Entyvio?

default
Posted on Sat, 14 May 2016
Question: I have Crohn's disease and I just started using Enviyto ?. (Not sure of the spelling). I am experiencing severe bloating, mild pain in my lower abdomen and mild nausea. I just stopped a long regimen of cortosteroid ? treatment for about two months (1 5 mg tab 2 x day). I gained a lot of weight and have explosive diarrhea. The bloating seems to be worsting. I have been prescribed meds to stop the diarrehea but it made it worse. So now I am just sticking to Mirolax 1xday. I feel swollen and have reported all of these symptoms to may doctor. I do not have bad eating habits and I was relatively small before the steroids.

Brief Answer:
Symptoms are due to the side effect of the medication

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ma'am, Hi & Welcome.
Thanks for posting your query on Health Care Magic.
After having gone through the history given in your query diligently I am of the opinion that
1. The symptoms are due to the side effects of the medication Amitiza (Lubiprostone).
2. Entyvio (Vedolizumab) is found to be effective to treat moderate to severe Crohn's disease who have had an inadequate response to or intolerant to Corticosteroids. It may also reduce the need for Corticosteroids in helping to control symptoms long term. Generally it is a safe medication, however fever, chills, body aches, cold or flu symptoms, vomiting, severe diarrhea, or stomach cramps may occur. The drug has to be discontinued if severe diarrhea or stomach cramps occur.
3. The weight gain and swollen feet appear to have been caused by the Corticosteroids due to retention of salt and water in the body. This is a reversible effect.
4. MiraLax (Polyethylene glycol) is used as a laxative to treat occasional constipation or irregular bowel movements in patients suffering from Crohn's disease.
Beside the above prescribed medications you need to have certain life style changes like
1. Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables with whole grain cereals such high fiber cereals and whole meal bread, etc. The fiber should be sufficient enough to produce bowel motions, which are easily passed without causing pain, abdominal bloating and too much wind.
2. Increase the fluid intake (up to 1.5 litres/day). High fiber diet without extra fluids may actually increase constipation. Caffeine and alcoholic beverages may have a dehydrating effect and therefore should be limited or avoided.
3. Regular exercise
Hope the suggestions given above would be useful in getting relief from the symptoms of Crohn's disease.
Should you have any follow up query, please feel free to ask.
Best regards.
