Question: Hi,
I have just flown back to the UK from new Zealand (30 hours flight) and had a heavy night on the spirits (alcohol) 3 days later.
In the morning after I developed lower back pain and a foul taste in my mouth which will not go away for 3 days.
is this kidney problems? I have drank alcohol all my life also!
Apart from the taste and pain I feel fine.
many thanks

Brief Answer:
Liver function tests should be done

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

If you have been using alcohol previously and increased your intake for the past few days then liver enzymes and synthetic function should be checked. ALT, AST, GGT, PT can be sent for. Alcohol mainly affects the liver however, a basic metabolic panel including renal function tests can be advised. The bad taste in your mouth can be related to a local hygiene factor or a systemic disorder such as liver or renal dysfunction. Acute liver or kidney insult should be ruled out. The lower back pain can be secondary to musculoskeletal cause especially with lying in a less than likely position after alcohol intoxication. It can be a spine issue or a urinary tract problem(stone/infection etc). Please go to an ER near you to assess for the above likely situations.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
