What Causes Severe Acne After Taking Mass Gainer Supplements?

Posted on Thu, 16 Feb 2017
Question: Hi dr,

The last couple of weeks I have started to work out at the gym for the first time I have started taking a mass gainer supplement which is mainly protein and carbohydrates I have attached pictures of the ingredients but I started taking it since I am pretty skinny for my height 57kg and 175cm in height and I wanted to start gaining weight. Now also recently I have started to get bad acne again which you can see in the pictures it's mainly on my forehead which I have never got acne there before. I used to be on minocycline over 4 months ago now and I was on it for about 3 months and it cleared my acne up until recently. Would I still be able to have the mass gainer shake if I went back on minocycline based on the ingridents of it? I used to have the 100mg minocycline twice daily do you also think it could be my hormones acting up since I started working out I am also 19 years of age.

Brief Answer:
I would suggest a trial of antiacne medications while on supplement

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist).
I have gone through your query and i have viewed the images. You seem to have inflammatory acne.
The recent flare in acne is definitely due to the high calorie supplement. High calorie diet plays havoc with insulin levels (causes a sharp increase) and which in turn causes acne flares by inducing hormonal imbalances.
Ideally i would suggest you to stop taking supplement however you may not want to do that therefore you may take a few days of oral minocycline (2 weeks) while on supplement and see how it goes.
In addition you may use topical microbenz 3.5% gel, twice daily.
If you notice adequte response to these medication you may continue with the supplement. Else you may need to stop it.

Thanks for that doctor makes sense since the supplement does inc

Thanks for that doctor it makes since the supplements increase your hormones but would having the minocycline have a negative effect on muscle growth so would it even be worth it? Also is there anyways to hide the acne and make it less apparent?

Brief Answer:
Oral and topical antiacne treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

No. Minocycline would not have any negative effect on muscle growth. It is non-hormonal.
You can use Calamine lotion to mask the erythema/ redness but treating them effectively with Oral Minocycline (Minoz ER 65) once daily and Microbenz 3.5% gel during the day would gradually reduce the acne. In addition you may use Deriva- CMS gel for night application on acne affected area.
