What Causes Severe Abdominal Cramps And Constipation While On Bentyl?
Question: I was just prescribed 10 mg of Bentyl. I have had IBS since I was 22 years old. Currently I am getting horrendous cramps and the inability to have a bowel movement. After days I finally have been able to go to the bathroom and then it is diarrhea. It is beginning again. Maybe I am not taking the drug correctly. What do you think?

Based on the history you have shared, it seems as if the current symptoms of late bowel movements are due to bentyl, who usually slows down the gut movement and may cause delayed bowel movements. And loose motions followed by constipation are usually a part of IBS symptoms.
You need to review your medications and dicuss adding other agents like mebeverine for cramps and other features. and selective serotonin re uptake inhibitors, like duloxetine or fluoxetine which have shown their benefits in IBS management. For pain OTC analgesics like acetaminophen can be used.
You can decrease dose of bentyl when loose motions settle to require guy motility. Other infective causes of loos motions should be worked up if diarrhea persists for few days including stool analysis and microscopy.
A detailed gastroentrologist review should be sought from time to time and fibre containing diets and ispaghol husk can be continued.
