What Causes Salivary Glads To Hurt While Eating?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Jun 2014
Question: My salivary glads hurt almost every time I eat something. Usually it is bilateral, and towards the back of my mandible. It is getting to the point that I would rather not eat than go through the pain. What could it be?

The pain is immediately after there is food in my mouth. It lasts while I'm eating. I have been taking advil occasionally for headaches during the last month. I went to the dentist about 3 weeks ago for a check-up and cleaning. No decay or gum problems. I took Amoxicillin for 10 days. My head began to hurt again after 3 days, so my dr. put me on levofloxacin which I took for 10 days, with the last day being today.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Salivary gland stones

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome.
Thanks for reply.
As per the symptoms posted here it appears that, there could be stones in the sub mandibular salivary gland.

This is common problem due to the nature of saliva secreted by these glands, which is thicker than the other glandular secretions like parotid.

These are very small stones(calculi) present in the ducts of the gland and causes pain during and after meals, when maximum amount of salivary flow is expected.

Therefore please do not worry and visit your oral surgeon.Sialography and x rays can exactly locate the site of obstruction caused by the stones.

Once detected, it can be easily approached and can be removed.
Please do not delay longer by taking pain killers because later on it might aggravate.

Meanwhile maintain good oral hygiene and drink plenty of fluids.
Let me know for further doubts.
Thanks.
Take care.
