What Causes Runny Nose In A 1 Year Old?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: My 1 year old daughter is suffering from runny nose for last 4 days. We have initially started with Homeopathy but after 3 days we started giving her
1) T-mimic (5 ml 2 times)
2) Ambrodil (5ml 3 times)
3) Nesoclear (3 times 2 drops on each side)
4) Otrinoz-Pediatric (0.05% Xylometazoline) Nasal drops. (2 drops , 1 time at night)

but this is not of much help as the mucus is clotted and she cant breath well at night while lying down or taking any liquid.

How many times can I give her Nasoclear in a day and what is the dosage?

Can i give her Otrinoz-Pediatric (0.05% Xylometazoline) Nasal drops.
in the medicine it is written that it can be given to children of 2 years and above... My baby's weight is 16 kg. Is the medicine suitable for her?And if i give her Otrinoz-Pediatric (0.05% Xylometazoline) Nasal drops what will be the doses? Will Xylometazoline cause any hard to my 1 year old baby?

We are giving her vapour with Carbol Plus drops in it. Is it safe?

Is T Mimic and Ambrodil making her mucus clot? Should we give her some other medicine?

Brief Answer:
I would like to continue all the medication except Otrinoz Drop

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

The most common cause of runny nose in this age is viral infection or allergy disorder.
Nasoclear contains nasal saline drop and is free of any side effect. It works by moistening the nasal mucosa helps in thinning the secretions. You can give it more frequently say 6-8 times depending on the severity.

Otrinoz-P(0.005% Xylometazoline) solution contains chemical(Imidazoline) which works on blood vessels of nasal mucosa and act as a decongestant(decreases the stuffiness and secretion).Till the date there is no research study proving its safety in children below two years of age. There are studies above 2 years comparing nasal saline drop to xylometazoline drop and showed that there is not much significant difference in the outcome(So why to use a medication which can have side effects particularly in a baby below 2 year of age).

Timinic contains Chlorpheniramine(antiallergic) and phenylephrine(safer decongestant).
The dose of a medicine is better decided by weight rather than age.As per the weight of your baby the dose is adequate.
Ambrodil contains mucolytic(mucus thinning agent) and the dose of 5 ml twice a day is appropriate.
Vapour with Carvol plus is a good home remedy and it works well.

So,I would like to increase the frequency of vapour and nasal saline drop to make her more comfortable.
Sometimes it takes time for the symptoms to subside. But I hope all these measures will help.
You case also use mucus sucker after few minutes of instilling the nasal drops.
If you notice severe breathing difficulty(chest wall indrawing, increased respiratory rate) consult emergency room to relieve the nasal obstruction.

I shall be glad to answer if you have any more query.
Wish her good health.
Regards

Thanks doctor for your advice.
I have also visited a general pediatrician locally just to check if my daughters chest is clear. Doctor confirmed that her chest is clear.
However instead of T-mimic doctor suggested Maxtra and asked me to stop Ambrodil as there is not cough symptom.
I am attaching the prescription for you review and final advice.
Many thanks

Brief Answer:
Composition of Maxtra and Tminic is same

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up

Composition of both Maxtra drop and Tminic syrup is same(Both contains Chlorpheniramine and phenylephrine). The 5 ml dose of Tminic is equivalent to 1 ml of Maxtra.
In the prescription dose is 1 ml three times day.
As there is no difference in previous(5 ml Tminic) and present(1 ml of Maxtra). So you can continue the present medication.
Ambrodil(Ambroxol) is a mucolytic and is not specific for cough only.It can be used if mucus is too thick.
If you find that the mucus is very thick and not much responding to Tminic and nasal saline drop you can also give Ambrodil.

Wish your child speedy recovery.

Regards
