What Causes Reflux And Flatulence After Food Intake?
Question: Hello. I often gag while taking pills and occasionally while eating. I am a very fit 58 year old male. I took a pill 9 hours ago and gagged on it and my esophagus has been making gurgling noises when I swallow my saliva since then accompanied by discomfort and the feeling of the need to burp. When the initial gag occurs, the water rushes back up and out. It's extremely unpleasant a unnerving. The discomfort has kept me awake all night. I've tried movements like torso twists to try to induce a burp but still feel that need. Any recommendations?
Brief Answer:
Have warm mint tea or one small spoon of olive oil
Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
It may be helpful to have warm mint tea or one small spoon of olive oil.It will relax esophageal spasm.
However, your symptoms may be sign of certain gastroesophageal problem such as hiatus hernia, GERD or gastric outlet syndrome. So you should do gastroscopy to rule this out.
You need antiacid therapy with ranitidine or pantoprazole and in some cases baclofen may be required to relax esophageal musculature. Consult your gastroenterologist and discuss the same.
Wish you good health. Regards

Thank you Doctor, about an hour ago I felt the sensation of a release behind my sternum. At that point my swallowing of saliva became normal and I burped a few times. I feel ok now and am drinking water and will eat soon. Prior to that, swallowing water was not possible. I will certainly visit a gastroenterologist. This has been a recurring issue with me and I've developed a bit of a phobia about pills. If you have any suggestions about how to deal with that area, I'd welcome your input. Thanks again, XXXXXXX Morel

I acute phase, certain measures that i ve mentioned above can help, but it will not treat underlying cause. to do this you may need to have antiacid and antispasmic long term therapy, but endoscopy or barium swallow test should be done prior to that.
