Question: My mother-in-law's arm broke out in red spots this morning. I read somewhere about that being a warning sign about the heart. What does it mean?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that these symptoms do not seem to be related to any cardiac disorder.

Hemorrhage (spot bleeding) or an allergic reaction may be related to this symptomatology.

As she is taking aspirin from a month, a low platelet count could be related to spot bleeding.

An infection or Herpes Zoster can not be excluded either.

Does she have arm pain? Does she have fever? Do these spots disappear after pressure on them? Does she have itching in this itching?

I would recommend consulting with her attending physician for a physical exam and some tests:

- complete blood count (including platelet count)
- inflammation tests (PCR, sedimentation rate)

Allergy tests may be needed if an allergic reaction is suspected.

You should discuss with her doctor on the above issues.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

She does not have pain or itching or an infection. The spots have been appearing and disappearing for over a year, but unrelated to any pressure. She recently had a full physical, with complete CBC, which did not indicate any problems. She has only been taking aspirin for one month. These spots have been appearing and disappearing long before the aspirin.

My opinion as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

It seems to be a chronic skin problem, including a fungal infection or an allergic reaction.

Could you please upload a photo of the arm for a second professional opinion?

Anyway, I would exclude a cardiac disorder related to this symptomatology, as the spots are only on one arm and all her clinical tests have resulted normal.

Best wishes,

Dr. Iliri
