What Causes Red Bumps With A White Ring Around It On Body?

default
Posted on Sat, 5 Jul 2014
Question: My son has red bumps with a white ring around them on parts of his back, shoulders and stomach. No where else do they appear. They look like a halo or a saturn ring around the red dot, not sure if the ring is because he is XXXXXXX or not. His bumps don't itch, hurt or burn. No fever, no puss, no blood. Online says it could be fungus, swimmers itch nothing that looks like what he has. He is up to date on his vaccines and he is 17.

Brief Answer:
Possibly Tinea Versicolor

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day
Dear Ms

Thanks for providing the clinical picture. The lesion is typical of Tinea Versicolor.

Tinea versicolor is a fungal infection of the skin. It's also called pityriasis versicolor and is caused by a type of yeast that naturally lives on your skin. When the yeast grows out of control, the skin disease, which appears as a rash, is the result.

The infection can happen for any of the following reasons:

1. Oily skin
2. Hot climate
3. Sweat

Because the yeast grows naturally on your skin, tinea versicolor is not contagious. The condition can affect people of any skin color. It's more likely to affect teens and young adults.

Treatment is by local application of Clotrimazole (anti fungal) based lotion twice a day for 2 weeks.

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Take care
