Posted on Fri, 5 Jun 2015 in Bones, Muscles and Joints
Question: I have right flank soreness which coms and goes. I feels more like a strain. I sometimes wiil get an ache/aches go to my back an sometime I will feel it going down to my groin area. It seemed to get somewhat better but then it started again after bowling last night. I first noticed the ache or strain like feeling when I was stretching before exercising a few weeks ago. 99% of the time it doesn't bother me unless I move.

Brief Answer:
Could be urinary tract stone, needs further evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

The right flank pain can be due to a Urinary tract infection or kidney stone related discomfort. Neuromuscular issues like a pulled muscle or Spinal nerve compression are also valid possibilities that require a physical exam which will also look into any signs of tenderness , rigidity that may indicate a local peritonitis showing bowel involvement. Appendix in an abnormal retrocecal position can also mimic as right flank pain, so the peritonitis should be examined for , ideally in the surgical E.R. X ray KUB and an Ultrasound Abdomen and pelvis should be advised along with a Urinalysis. Blood counts and routine chemistry should also be ordered as part of the workup. Treatment depends on the size and location of the stone, if any. Smaller stones that are less than 5 mm are usually passed spontaneously by prescribing tamsulosin, potassium citrate and adequate water intake. Larger stones may require lithotripsy or open surgery.
