What Causes Rectal Itching During 19th Week Of Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Mar 2017
Question: Hi,
I am 19 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing rectal/anul itching since the beginning of the pregnancy (even before I conceived).
I have been treated for several vaginal infections throughout the pregnancy, including strep G and C, strep A on the groin and most recently klebsiella pnuemonae in the upper vagina. These were treated, and cleared, with penicillin V and co-amoxiclav.
I have also taken several thrush treatments, including canesten pesseries, cream and external cream.
The vagina is no longer itchy, and the discharge seems normal, however, I am still getting a very itchy rectal area, especially at night.
Can you please advise what might be causing this? A midwife suggested I have thrush in this area, but why does the Canesten cream I apply not cure this? ALso, I do use progesterone 400mg suppositories, once daily, inserted through the rectum. Could this be contributing?
IF so, how come I had the itching before I even used the progesterone suppositories?
Please advise and what I can do to help. I am already wearing cotton underwear etc.
Many thanks

Brief Answer:
Pinworm infection needs to be considered.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to healthcare magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

Progesterone suppository does cause itching. As you have already been treated for yeast infection and since you have this itching even before pregnancy, pinworm infection needs to be considered.
Discuss with your doctor and get the tape test done to diagnose it. If confirmed it can be treated with Mebendazole (only if infection confirmed).
If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.
Best wishes,
Dr Rama

It is 100% not pin worms.
It affects the abul area and inside buttox.
What else could it be?
Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Itching specially at night around anus is commonly due to pinworm infection. There is no harm in getting tested.
If it is excluded, we need to rule out allergy.

Thanks.
Could it be an infection?
Should I use nappy cream?
How likely is it the progesterone is causing this?

Much appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Other than pinworm infection I cannot think of any other infection. Use nappy cream and see whether it resolves.

Since you say that you had this complaint even before using Progesterone, it is unlikely that it is the cause. Stop using it for a week and see. Stopping it for one week is not going to harm you.

Best wishes,
Dr Rama
