What Causes Racy Heart After Increasing Dosage Of Amlodipine Besylate?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Apr 2015
Question: I had been taking 5 mg amlodipine besylate for 6 months. My new doctor upped the dose to 10 mg in January. Within a couple of weeks, I felt my heart pounding in my chest periodically, most often when I sat down and relaxed at night. She brushed my concerns off and added Metaprolol. At this point, I was uncomfortable with starting a new medicine, when I felt the first was not working properly. I dropped the Amlodipine back down to 5 mg. Heart pounding is better, but not gone. Should I stop the amlodipine totally?

Brief Answer:
The best option is to add beta blocker to 5 mg Amlodipine

Detailed Answer:
Dear Mrs,

Increased heart rate is a rare side effect of Amlodipine.
If you were my patient, I would return to 5 mg Amlodipine and add beta blocker such ad Metoprolol or Bisoprolol to control heart rate and blood pressure. Also I would perform holter monitoring, which is an examination, during which 24 hour ECG is registered, and the cause of your symptoms can be find out.

Hope I could help you.

Wishing you good health
