What Causes Pulmonary Venous Congestion?

default
Posted on Sat, 25 Oct 2014
Question: I have just been released from hospital a week ago for recurrent DVT, I had asked some questions here. Now I have information on my ct angio and curious is pulmonary venous congestion the same as pulmonary hypertension? its worded as portal venous congestion in the description and just pulmonary venous congestion in impression. I do have cardiomegaly & emphysema. As well as a 3.6 cm ascending aorta ectasia, ectasia of desending aorta with no size noted. I do see a hematologist & a pulmonologist, I see pulmo in 3 weeks for follow up. These results are new developments since February when I had a ct done for nodules.

of note: my mother does have pulmonary hypertension. That's why Im curious if the pulmonary venous congestion is the same. Im going through testing for some genetic issues with clotting, this may be 1 more piece to the puzzle. Also, my father passed from an aorta aneurysm and my mother also has both an ascending & descending aorta aneurysm.

Brief Answer:
pulmonary venous congestion is different thing.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Pulmonary venous congestion and pulmonary hypertension are different things.
Pulmonary hypertension is related to pulmonary ARTERY. Pulmonary artery is taking deoxygenated blood from heart to lung. And when pressure in this increases (normal is 12-15)it is known as pulmonary hypertension. WHO classifies it in 5 parts.
Pulmonary Venous congestion is similar of pulmonary edema and related to the pulmonary VEIN. Commonly known as wet lungs. Pulmonary vein carry oxygenated blood from lung to the heart. So when heart pumping is decreased, there is back pressure in pulmonary veins and thus they are full of blood and known as pulmonary venous congestion.
So both are different things. And in some patients both can be seen together.
And in recurrent DVT pulmonary embolism is common and this is one of the cause for pulmonary hypertension.

Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Wishing you good health.
Thanks.
