What Causes Productive Cough, Facial Pain And Nasal Congestion?

default
Posted on Thu, 13 Nov 2014
Question: I went to the doctor last Tuesday, 10.14.2014, after having a cough and sinus congestion for 3 weeks and developing a constant headache (right behind my eyes) and right sided chest pain. First he thought it was pneumonia then did CXR and said it was bronchitis. Gave me a Z-Pak. Finished on Saturday. Chest pain is mostly gone but still have an "achy" feeling in my lungs. Still have productive cough, facial pain (maxillary, frontal, and jaw), slight ear pain (rt side), nasal congestion (mostly rt sided), fatigue, occasional dizziness (especially when standing and stretching after exercise), occasional sweats, and a headache. I am wondering if I should go back or wait this out - I am now in week 4 of this but don't want to go if I will probably be told to just take OTC and wait it out.

Brief Answer:
Z-pak alone may not be sufficient...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query; I will try my best to help you with this problem.

1. The symptoms described by you seem to be features of acute sinusitis with bronchitis.

2. An x-ray of the paranasal sinuses and diagnostic nasal endoscopy can help in identifying the extent of the problem.

3. Z-pack alone may not be sufficient in treating this condition. You will require a mucolytic such as bromhexine or ambroxol for relieving the sinus secretions, saline nasal spray for clearing the secretions from the nose and the sinuses and reducing the nasal congestion. Also, you need to follow the below mentioned home remedies for an early recovery:
a. Drink plenty of warm water
b. Do steam inhalation for 2-3 times a day for 2 minutes, this opens up the sinuses, reduces the throat and chest discomfort
c. Avoid chilled food and beverages/coffee/alcohol/smoking if any

4. If the symptoms persist, request your doctor for a change in the antibiotics.

Hope I have answered your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.
