What Causes Popping Sensation In The Ears?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Mar 2017
Question: My ear has been popping very uncomfortably every time I open and close my jaw when eating, and every time I raise my head up and down. If one presses the tip of their finger into the ear canal entry, they can feel bone or cartilage or something popping in and out of joint forcefully every time I open and close jaw or raise head up and down. This has been getting worse and makes it very unpleasant to eat. What could it be and what could be done about it as regards seeing a physician?

Brief Answer:
It is TMJOINT arthritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Thank you for posting your question on HealthcareMagic.
By the description of your symptoms it looks like you have a condition called Tempero mandibular joint arthritis .
In this any movement like opening or closing of the jaw causes a click and weird feeling in the ear .
If left like this you could devolop Meinere's disease.
Are you having any episodes of vertigo or sounds in the ear?
I would recommend you to see a Dentist or a facio maxillary surgeon who will help you in this regard.
Best wishes

Thank you much Dr. XXXXXXX :)

I do not have any vertigo symptoms. I also do not have any abnormal sounds in my ear, with the exception of the clicking sound as my ear forcefully pops in and out of joint when I move my jaw.

When dentists treat TMJ, is this typically done via correcting mandibular mis-alignment? My right ear is lower than my left ear due to mandible seeming to be not aligned proportionately - which has been the case all my life and has not until now at the age of 40 seemed to cause any issues.

Kindly,

Brief Answer:
Ok

Detailed Answer:
Hello again , Very glad to know you don't have any vertigo or tinnitus.
Though the mallalignment of your jaw is old as age advances stiffness of joints do devolop.
Especially since there is already an existing issue even minor stiffness could affect the ear .
The treatment need no necessarily be surgical correction.
If the dentist doesn't find any kind of trigger like infection which could be worsening the issue he will ask you to go in for mouth guard especially at night .
Physical therapy in the form of ice or warm packs and jaw excercises will also help .
Once this is undercontrol hopefully your ear issue will also be solved.
Hope this helps
Best wishes
