What Causes Pigmented Area Around Optic Nerve?

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Jan 2015
Question: Today I got digital retinal pictures taken with my eye exam. The picture shows a pigmented area around my optic nerve. The Optician told me not to alarmed and that she is sending the images to another doctor to review but he will be out of town until next month. Of course I've googled the mess out of it since getting home and am now worried I may have Choroidal Melanoma. I am a 24F with blue eyes and fair skin and my dad has also had skin melanoma. Should I be concerned and get it checked again before next month?

Brief Answer:
It looks like simple pigmentation of optic disc.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic.

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

I reviewed your history and the retinal photo attached with the question.
It looks like simple benign pigmentation of the retinal pigment epithelium near the optic disc.

It is not showing features of malignant lesion like sub retinal fluid, vitreous seeds, retinal detachment...

This simple pigmentation are commonly seen in people who are fair skinned.

Hence I advice you not to worry, however follow up is required to see its behaviour.

Do write back to me once you get the opinion from your ophthalmologist.
Hope this is helpful to you.

Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you
With regards
