What Causes Persistent Tension Behind The Neck And Heart Palpitations?

default
Posted on Wed, 6 Apr 2016
Question: I was having anxiety and depression for many years. During the last year I was prescribed with Epitril 0.5 and Serlift 25mg. Now I am doing mostly alright with depression and anxiety. But there is a persistent tension concentrated in one the area or another like around the back portion of the neck, or the forehead or the eyes or dizziness or palpitation (pounding heart). In the sleep many times I get bad dreams that wakes me up with palpitation. These symptoms just don't go away.

Other than bad dream issue and pounding chest I don' t have any other sleep issues with or without medication. I sleep for 8 hours even without any medicine.

Also, now I have many good things in life to look forward to, unlike previously. And I have many positive engagements. I have eliminated all the stressful conditions. So if this nagging issue of persisting tension is gone then I can have my life back.

Brief Answer:
Relaxation exercises.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concerns.

It's good to know that your symptoms are resolved with such low dose of serlift.

In my opinion, the persisting tension which you are worried about should go by relaxation exercises. Progressive muscle relaxation technique is very helpful in such cases.

If possible, practice deep breathing and meditation also.

You can talk to your psychiatrist about this and learn the muscle relaxation technique. It's videos are also available on internet.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

Dear Doctor,
Thanks for your swift response. I will certainly try the Progressive muscle relaxation.

But I feel I do need some medication for relaxing these tension as it is just too much. It is very intense whichever area it gets in (like around the back portion of the neck, or the forehead or the eyes or dizziness or palpitation or the limbs).

Like when the tension settles around forehead/eye region I can't even look at other person in his eyes. I have to either gaze away or just feel like closing my eyes. When doing exercise like walking I feel either dizzy or feel the tension in my fingers/feet. Can please suggest something to ease the tension a bit? It is just too much.

Brief Answer:
Amitriptyline.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
Sorry for late response.

As far as medication is concerned, I think amitriptyline in low doses 10-25mg (prescription drug) can help you.
It will help you to relax.

Kindly talk to your doctor about this and get a valid prescription too.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.
