What Causes Persistent Symptoms Of Lyme Arthritis Despite Taking Medication?
Question: Hi XXXX Doctor
I'm Seventy years old, Male, a left high leg amputee in good
spirits and good health; Except I have been working in desert lands
and contracted Lyme Disease; My remaining knee and shoulder
joints and muscles however started aching so bad I hesitated to take
another step because it hurt so bad and I have some numbness in my
fingers and toes and extreme fatigue. I stopped treatment after 28
days of doxycycline but symptoms started to increase so I began
taking doxycycline again after a 5 day hiatus; I have 4 days left of this
medication.
What should I do If the symptoms persist?

For early Lyme disease, doxycycline is effective.
Oral administration of doxycycline for 30 days is recommended for the initial treatment of Lyme arthritis.
Among patients with arthritis who do not respond to oral antibiotics, re-treatment with IV ceftriaxone for 28 days is appropriate.
Hence If you have persistent symptoms after the oral course of antibiotic,to eradicate Lyme disease you have to take IV ceftriaxone for 28 days.
