What Causes Persistent Pain In Upper Abdomen While On Amlodipine Besylate?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Sep 2015
Question: In the last three days I have had an unrelenting stomach ache. It's not heartburn; it's an ache in my upper stomach. It isn't affected by eating. I don't feel hungry; in fact, I feel full. I'm not constipated. I'm not gassy. I'm not burping. I just have a stomach ache, as if I have been punched in the stomach. The only medication that I am currently taking is Amlodipine Besylate for high blood pressure. I had been taking Simvastatin until one month ago, when I began to experience pain in the front part of both of my legs beneath the knee. I stopped taking Simvastatin, hoping that the pain in my legs would abate, to no avail. In doing some research, I see that stomach pain is a less common side effect of Amlodipine Besylate. Could that be the cause? Am I perhaps having withdrawal from the cessation of Simvastatin? Any ideas or suggestions?

Brief Answer:
less likely due to Amlodipine or as a withdrawal of Simvastatin

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
Noted that you are taking Amplodipin Besylate and stopped Simvastatin.
You have now unrelenting pain in upper stomach (abdomen) as if been punched, not affected by eating, do not feel hungry, feel full, not constipated, not gassy, not burping.

Since there are no other symptoms other than pain like being punched in the upper abdomen and feeling full, it will be difficult to say the reason.

My thoughts and answers to your queries:
Take anti-spasmodic like Dicyclomin, PPI like Omeprazole, and see the results.
Consult your Doctor for clinical evaluation, actual examination of abdomen for any lump or so and ask for investigations accordingly which may be in the form of upper GI Endoscopy, Ultrasonography and/or CT scan of abdomen. This may be required considering your age of 71.
As far the side effects of anything including the medicines the dictum is anything can cause any side effects, but we have to consider that timing and other factors.
Like if you are taking Amlodipine for a long time, it causing stomach pain now is rare or say almost unheard of.
Simvastatin effect or withdrawal would have been immediate on stopping.

I hope this answer helps you to get a proper diagnosis, and get a proper further treatment. Please feel free to ask for more or if you need further clarifications or if you feel there is a gap of communication.
