default
Posted on Tue, 20 Sep 2016
Question: For the past three weeks of have been experiencing a dull ache in my tailbone that is especially noticeable when I sit in or rise out of a chair. I have not fallen on it, and I thought it might be from the Sp[inning class I take two or three times a week. But I haven't attended a class in a week, and the pain persists.

Brief Answer:
Get confirmation of the cause and get treated accordingly

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, albeit short and specific.
To recapitulate: Male/66 - dull ache in tailbone 3 weeks - noticeable on sitting or rising out of chair - no history of fall on it - attending spinning classes - except for the last week ...
This is called coccydynia and can occur spontaneously.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
- First of all get a clinical evaluation by a General Surgeon so that the examination can confirm that this is coccydynia and not the pother problems that mimic it - for example pilonidal cyst, fissure or any other affection of the local area.
- Use cushion or doughnut pillow to sit on so that the pressure is transferred via buttocks.
- Sitz bath in a tub with warm water.
- Mild laxative if you have hard stools.
- Anti-inflammatory medicines to reduce the swelling and relieve the pain.
- Avoid long sitting hours.
Usually these measures help alleviate the pain.
If not, then further management can be added on in the form of local steroid injection.

I hope this answer helps you.
