What Causes Persistent Nausea After Taking Predinisone And Antabuse?

Posted on Wed, 8 Oct 2014
Question: I had bronchitis and was prescribed prednisone for bronchitis and antabuse for alcoholism. After a few days of taking the predinisone and antabuse I developed a persistent nausea that lasted two weeks. When I started to get over the nausea I started drinking again for a week. My last drink was last Wednesday and I started the antabuse last Friday. That night after taking antabuse I got very nauseated again and have been nauseated since ever since Friday. Is it the antabuse causing all this nausea and will the nausea go away.

Brief Answer:
alcohol antabuse

Detailed Answer:
yes thats what antabuse does. It has disulfiram in it and that increases the aldehyde production by alcohol causing aversion to alcohol. I seriously suggest you keep using antabuse for your own health. The nausea that you feel is not bad for your health but the alcohol use is. It can lead to myriad of health problems. You can also join alcohol anonymous program to get rid of this habit. Thankyou

I never drank any alcohol while on antabuse so should I still be getting nausea and do you think the nausea is from the antabuse? How long do you think I will be nauseated, I took the antabuse 500 mg once Friday and have not taken anymore. The nausea is too severe to continue with this drug if this is what is causing my nausea.

Brief Answer:
nausea due to antabuse

Detailed Answer:
yes it is most likely antiabuse that is causing your nausea. However its nauseatic effect is only more when you have alcohol in your system. If its really that bad, stop using antabuse. Other options against alcohol abuse are naltrexone and acamprosate. Discuss it with your physician. Thank you.
