What Causes Persistent Mouth Ulcers In A Person With Hypothyroidism?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: I realize the same doctor may not get this. Anyway, for 6 months I have had a rash, rough skin and swelling on the lips and vermillion borders of my mouth.

Last time we spoke (or spoke to a colleague of yours), you suggested acyclovir. I have used it 5 times a day for two and a half weeks and it has not done anything to change the rash.

I recently found out I have hypothyroidism and that mouth rash can be a symptom. How would I treat it if that was the case?

Creams I have tried:
-Diflupredinate 0.5 mg
-Desonide 0.5% cream
-Betaderm 0.1% ointment
-Ketoderm/Hydroval 1:1
-Acyclovir

Brief Answer:
Low thyroid function leads to mouth ulcers.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXX,

I am Dr. Neel Kudchadkar and I will help you with your health issues.
The fact is that mouth ulcers can be caused due to a variety of reasons. Viral infections are just one reason. Ulcers can be caused by psychological stress even, to give you an example, these are called apthous ulcers. Ulcers in the mouth can occur due to deficiencies of vitamins, in particular vitamin B and C. The reason that is most accurate, so to speak, as regards you getting ulcers in the mouth is lower than normal functioning of a butterfly shaped gland in your throat called as the thyroid gland. I would advise you to go to an endocrinologist and he or she would prescribe Levothyroxine for you. This drug might take time to cure you because it will have to be titrated against your needs for the hormone. However you should be quite fine with this treatment and also taking Multivitamin tablets. This will definitely immediately help you rid yourself of mouth ulcers. Meanwhile you can apply chlorhexidine drops or mouthwash and gargle 2 - 3 times a day for quick
relief.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like what you're describing is a "canker sores" instead.
But I have no rash inside my mouth.

The problem with my mouth is a rash all over my outer lips and particularly at the vermillion boarder (my attached picture.)

Canker sores are typically white and sit inside the inner lip, right? Because I don't have that symptom.

Thanks. I hope you can clarify this.

Brief Answer:
Why not try Oralone paste?

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX,

I really appreciate the details you sent in your follow up query. Thanks.
You seem to be a highly educated, smart discerning consumer. Therefore
I will take you into confidence and keep you informed about your treatment.

To start with we have to eliminate what we call as 'diagnoses'. (what the diseases are). It is obvious that your problem is NOT caused by a virus. Acyclovir is the same as any of the best antivirals for such a problem. And if it has not resolved the problem you know it is obvious what is NOT causing the lip sores.

The culprit according to my opinion is a hormonal. I am confident about this.

So, let's fight fire with fire.

As per policies, I will politely ask you to go to a dermatologist (a skin specialist)
and he or she will probably give you this paste called as Oralone. The chemical
in it is called Triamcinolone Acetonide. This accelerates healing of these ulcers.
Regardless of aetiology (meaning: cause of a disease).

The practical fact is that the ulcers will gradually (within days) cease to exist.
along with the rash, soreness and other undesirable problems.

I am also convinced that you should really help yourself and take medications
for your hypothyroid issues. A consistent state of hypothyroidism brings a lot more problems including insomnia, irregular periods etc., which wouldn't bode well for you health in the longer run. Please get it looked at and get started on Thyroxine supplementation.

Maybe you might want to make that call to your MD, now, and start taking
Levothyroxine on a regular basis.

Dear Viridian, Please take care.
