What Causes Persistent Gastritis With A Panic Disorder?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Nov 2017
Question: I had been suffering from gastritis and panic disorder for over 2 years. I believe these conditions are both related to each other because when i was diagnosed with gastritis and severe pain in the upper abdominal i started feeling dizzy and having panic attacks at the same time. i then went onto see a psychiatrist after my consultation with the gastro entomologist who confirmed i have a panic disorder. the doctor initially gave me omeprazole i cannot remember the dosage now but i was taking for one year and then i stopped taking this medicine under the supervision and guidance of the psychiatrist I am seeing. the psychiatrist then prescribed me Escitalopram the branded model called cipralex (SSRI). I have been feeling better since taking this medicine as it has incredibly reduced the anxiety symptoms I used to feel and stopped my panic attacks. i was then introduced to a family doctor who had told me to take niacin vitamin b3 in large amount, vitamin k2, vitamin d3 , digestive enzymes and magnesium to help get me off the escitalopram (ssri), and as soon as i starting taking these supplements i felt allot better and I have stopped taking the ssri for almost one year now and feel great.

I would like to add that I believe what initially caused my gastritis was high dosage of caffeine, protein powders and high amount of fried eggs would all aggravate my symptoms and make me feel so il to the extend I could not walk outside my house feeling tightness in chest and completely unwell.

I enjoy bodybuilding now and workout 4/5 times a week. Since i have gotten better i have been training in the gym, I was once told on this website by a doctor that after a year or so after my stomach lining heals I should be able to have protein powder and eggs again. I do have small amount of eggs and have no issues. I recently took a protein milkshake twice from a vending machine at the gym and was completely fine. The third time i took one with different brand I started having the same side effects as I initially had which was anxiety symptoms and irritation in chest area (i would also like to mention I had a strong tea that day aswel which may have led to the irritation also due to caffeine amount). As I am now taking the vitamins it has greatly reduced that side affect but it is still slightly there i can feel a little iriitation still. and I have ordered a bag of protein powder from my protein.co.uk, this brand is supposed to be very clean protein not mixed with other chemical, substances. I would like to give this a try and see if I can use this product without the ill feelings. I would like to know from you doctor, do you think it is the protein powder in general that my body is not suiting or a substance in the protein powder as i have not yet distinguished this, the two protein powders i had from the vending machine may have irritated my stomach lining leading upto the third one causing the problem or it could have just been the third one causing the problem whereas the other first two being fine. I would like to give the protein powder one let try before I officially stop if it doesn't suit my body since iv ordered a new bag from a completely different brand i have not tried before and heard good things about as I feel it improves my muscle building programme. I have still not understood also why protein powder causes inflammation in the stomach lining, and if it happens again is there anything else I can do to reduce my symptoms apart from taking higher dosage of niacin for anxiety, and gaviscon o reduce any inflammation in the stomach.

I would also like to mention that If i am unsuccessful in being able to take this protein powder , I will then go onto make my homemade protein milkshake by blending oats egg whites milk and possibly some banana or honey/peanut butter. I would assume this is a better option but since I have ordered the bag if you could give me some idea as to what is going wrong with protein powders and my body.

I would like to ask this question to gastro entomologist please

Brief Answer:
Preservatives and other additives is the cause for gastritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic for your health concern

Protein in itself will not cause gastritis. However, preservatives and additives present in commercially available protein powder can cause irritation and inflammation of gastric lining.
You can try all natural and organic brands of protein powder with low or no caffeine content (as caffeine trigger gastritis symptoms for you).
If commercially available product is not tolerated, then you can switch to home made protein powder made with organic and natural ingredients.

HI, thanks for response,

I spoke to my doctor he said similar to thing to you, saying it could be the sweeteners in the protein powders such as sucrolose as it is a nuerotoxin , the protein company also produces the whey powder with stevia option as a sweetener as opposed to the sucrolose. will this make any difference in protecting my stomach lining from inflammation any other problems which way be causing my symptoms?

these are the ingredients for the protein powder I am planning to purchase

Whey Protein Concentrate (Milk) (91%), Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin), Cocoa Powder, Natural Flavouring, Sweetener (Steviol Glycosides)

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Stevia/ Steviol is a natural sweetener extracted from a plant. It is definitely better for your stomach when compared to artificially produced sweetener like Sucralose/aspartame.
However, some people rarely do develop stomach upset and bloating with stevia. So I cannot assure you 100% that stevia will not cause gastritis.
It is definitely worth to give the whey protein product containing steviol a try and see how you respond. Most likely you will not develop any problems as the protein powder you mentioned contains all natural ingredients.

thanks doc, if i decide to have cartoned egg whites with oats and milk / yoghurt/honey/banana by blending them and consuming 3/4 times a week is this safe for me. from my past experience when i would eat any more than 3 fried eggs It would irritate my stomach lining and give me the same symptoms as having a protein drink it would cause hot flush and give me tightness in chest. can drinking raw eggs give me salmonella or other problems also?

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

It is not recommended to consume raw whole eggs or egg whites due to the risk for salmonella infection. Moreover, raw eggs will limit protein and biotin absorption .So avoid consuming raw eggs or egg whites.
In most people the oil used for frying eggs is the reason for stomach upset. So use no or minimal oil for frying your eggs. If limiting oil does not seem to help, then you can limit eggs in your diet and use other sources of protein rich food in your diet like chicken/Turkey breast, soy beans, lentils, almonds, peanut butter, oatmeal, flaxmeal, tilapia fish etc.

OK thanks doc

I am going to try an unflavoured pure whey protein powder with not additives or sweeteners just pure whey. what is the difference between whey concentrate and whey isolate and will one of these affect my inflammation more than the other or it shouldn't affect it?

from my understanding the lactose is removed from the isolate whey but I don't know if this makes any difference to my gastritis or inflammation?

Whey isolates, and particularly hydrolysates, are more rapidly absorbed than concentrates and create a more profound insulin response.4 This makes whey isolates popular post-workout choices. Whether this increased rate of absorption translates into any real-world anabolic advantage is arguable, but anyone wishing to limit rises in insulin may want to avoid isolates because of their effects on insulin release.

^ it says here insulin will rise if i take the isolate, will this have any negative affect on my anxiety, am i better of taking the concentrate or it does not make a difference?

hi doctor iv read this website and done some research i think concentrate is the better option

https://renewingallthings.com/lifestyle/diet/protein-powder-causing-inflammation/

i read this ^

also when i search in google why protein is causing inflammation in my stomach, it even says there it could be the isolate protein causing it.

So Il give the protein concentrate a try : here is the ingredient of the one i am planning to purchase

ORGANIC PURE WHEY PROTEIN™ INGREDIENTS
Unflavoured
Organic Whey Protein Concentrate (100%) (Milk).

SUITABLE FOR
Vegetarians, Gluten Free, Non-GM, Organic, Soya Free.

please could you give me your advice on this and even on the isolate.

thank you

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

I have gone through your question and also looked up the article you shared. Thank you for sharing the article.
I would recommend that Whey concentrate is the better option than isolate.
Whey isolate contains 90% protein content (vs 80% in concentrate). Whey isolate also has fewer calories, fat and lactose thus making it better for people who plan on gaining muscle mass/ bulking and in people with lactose intolerance. However, in order to attain such high protein concentration and low calorific value, the whey isolate undergoes a series of manufacturing process making hanges in protein structure which can cause gastritis and other ill effects on health. Moreover, the rapid insulin response on taking isolate can cause changes in your sugar levels, which can trigger anxiety symptoms.

So I encourage you to take whey concentrate. I have gone through the ingredients present in the organic whey protein you mentioned. All the ingredients are safe and organic. The risk for triggering gastritis is minimal.

Hope this answers your question

Hi doctor, I just took a sip of this protein whey concentrate today blended with yoghurt peanut butter and banana. After half an hour noticed anxiety symptoms and tightness in the chest. Iv also got a slight cold today Due to weather change. But I think it must an allergy of whey protein what is your opinion? Is it possible to feel these symptoms just after one sip of this drink? If this is not suitable for me could you please tell me if pea protein powder would be better to avoid any of these problems.

Hi I took one sip, about 30 minutes later I remember sitting in my car feeling very anxious and lightheaded and a tightness/strain in the chest sensation. The same feeling I had when I took the protein from vending machine and when I used to take it along time ago at the time of my panic attacks 1/2 years ago. I also remember getting hot flush on the face (face feeling very warm) that is about it . Then I took my vitamin supplements which reduced the symptoms greatly the niacin etc

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Your symptoms are not typical of food allergy.

However, since you developed the symptoms 30 min after consuming the protein powder, it is better to avoid the whey protein.

I cannot assure you that you will not develop symptoms on pea protein. Pea protein is better tolerated than whey in many people especially since pea protein is devoid of lactose. Please, also note that taking niacin supplements at high doses (1000 mg/day) can cause facial flushing.
