What Causes Persistent Chapped Lips?

default
Posted on Wed, 12 Nov 2014
Question: Hi! I have a question about my lips, which seems like a weird thing to say, but there it is. For about 4 months now, they have been chapped, no matter how often I apply chapstick, etc. A t first I blamed the overhead fan in my bedroom, which my husband always wanted on at night during the summer. But they are still chapped and the overhead fan is no longer on, and there is a little redness around my mouth, not just strictly on my lips. I have tried using triple antibiotic ointment, but that doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Vitamin deficiency and dehydration.

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam

Welcome to healthcaremagic.

I read your condition and understand your concern.Lips don’t contain oil glands like your skin does, so they can dry to become chapped very easily. In fact, dry lips is also one of the signs of more widespread body dehydration. If you don’t drink enough during the day, your lips may become dry.

Other causes of dry lips include licking your lips frequently, not protecting them with proper ointment, mouth breathing , excess consumption of lot of vitamin A causes cracked lips.

You should try all these;
Avoid excess of chemical products.
Use Coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, olive oil and honey.
Be careful with your diet.
Drink atleast 8-10 glasses of water everyday.
Take vitamin B complex supplements for few months.
Use a humidifier in your home or office.

If after all these things your symptoms do not subside, then you should visist a nearby doctor.

Hope this explanation helped.Take care.
