default
Posted on Wed, 13 Sep 2017
Question: Hello,
For four months I had lower stomach cramping daily. I scheduled a colonoscopy and right after all my pain went away. All results were normal, but now a year later the same pain has come back. What could possibly be the reason that the colonoscopy made the pain go away? I am going on vacation in a few days..do you have any over the counter suggestions to eliminate this crampy low grade pain?

Brief Answer:
Can be irritable bowel syndrome.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.
Have gone through your details and i appreciate your concerns.
As per the description given by you the pain seems to be due to irritable bowel syndrome.Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a very common disorder which affects the colon (large intestine). In this syndrome there is some problem in the functional ability of intestines that leads to the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. The anatomical structure of the intestines is normal, hence all the tests performed would show normal results.
It can resolve unexpectedly for periods throughout an individual’s lifespan, recurring at any time again like in your case.
In your case pain was relieved after colonoscopy this was just a matter of chance i don't think it has any scientific explaination(as colonoscopy was normal).

Please answer -
Does the discomfort or pain sometimes get better after a bowel movement?
Is the discomfort or pain associated with a change in the frequency of bowel movements?
Is the discomfort or pain sometimes associated with constipation or diarrhea?

Rx

I would not suggest you to take OTC as drugs like Hyocine or Dicyclomine would cause LPR.
Mebeverine(colofac) is very useful in IBS and is well tolerated by patient with minimal side effects(chances of LPR are minimal).Mebeverine works on certain muscles in the wall of your intestines, causing them to relax but its not OTC

However in case you need only OTC take Buscopan (Hyocine)tablet twice daily and Take a PPI like omeprazole 20 mg for few days initially .This will prevent reflux of acid.

Report how you feel after 10 days.

Hope i was helpful dear patient.
