Swollen painful tongue can be due to several reasons including amylodosis (where protein deposition occur in different organs including tongue), hypothyroidism, vitamin B12 deficiency, Iron deficiency or food allergies.
Biopsy of tongue, thyroid function test, vitamin B12 and iron levels are required as initial screening evaluation.Also, keep watch on any specific foods that trigger tongue swelling. Please be advised to follow up with your primary care provider for further evaluation and management.
