What Causes Painful Lump On The Outside Of Knee?

default
Posted on Tue, 15 Sep 2015
Question: I have rheumatoid arthritis. I have a golf ball (slightly smaller) lump on the outside of my right knee which my doctor thinks may be related to the arthritis. Recently the pain has been increasing and the lump got larger and firmer. The last two nights there was no pain and now the lump has receded and there seems to be fluid below the knee cap. and the pain has returned. Is this an emergency? I am scheduled for an ultrasound in a week.
Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your message.
It is not an emergency.
There are many different conditions that cause the pain to fluctuate. This is usually accompanied by a swelling.
If your doctor is sure that the swelling is due to the Rheumatoid arthritis, I think there is no reason to worry.
Standard pain killers can help till ultrasound is done.
Best of luck. Dr Mittal.
