What Causes Painful Lump On The Back Of Neck?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: Last Friday, into Saturday, I experienced a severe head ache throughout the night. This past Sunday, I noticed a lump on the back of my head and one below it on the back of my neck. While the one on the head bulges out, the one on the neck can't be seen, but can be felt. It feels like a round node. Since Sunday, more of the lumps on the head have developed (approx. 6). All are painful, but do not itch or present other issues and all are on the right side. No new diet, meds, or other items (shampoos, soaps, etc.). I now have increasing pain in my neck extending into my right ear and also down the right side of my back. Since I am mostly bald, the lumps on the head can be readily detected. I am a male, 51 years of age, have RSD/CRPS limited to the left foot, controlled by morphine ER daily. No other meds. I also noticed a spike in blood pressure to 180/135 where it has remained. Your thoughts please.

Brief Answer:
its lymph nodes

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to HCM.

Those swellings are most likely lymph nodes and as they are painful, so mostly they are of infective etiology. Like an ear infection. You will need further tests which depend on the findings of examination by a doctor.

I would suggest that you show them to a physician or an ent specialist for proper evaluation and to find the septic foci. He might also ask you a few blood test like a complete blood count and sugar levels and prescribe you antibiotics and antiinflammatory drugs for the same.

Hope I have been helpful.

How many lymph nodes does a person have and where are they located?
Is there any risk/issue (outside of discomfort) if left untreated?
Regarding the blood pressure readings, is it cause for concern?
Is there a BP level that is critical or does it vary by person?

Brief Answer:
your bp is very high

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Sorry, i my last reply i compltely forgot about your bp. You are having very high bp and you need to see a physician immediately is its still at that level.

Normal bp for adults is arround 120/80 mm og Hg.

Yours is way too high.

A person has about 600-800 lymph nodes and they are usually not felt or seen. If seen or felt, they signify some disease like infection or malignancy.

Malignant lymph nodes enlargement is usually painless. Infective enlargement is usually painful.

Thats the reason you need to be started on antibiotics. But before that we need to find the source point of infection.

So if your bp is still high, i would suggest that you show to the emergency room and they will do all that is needed.
