What Causes Painful Lump On Jaw?

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: Hi,
I have a hard, fairly painful lump on my jaw an inch away from my chin (seems to be more painful at night when I am in bed). I just had some allergy issues and what I think was a Eustachian tube flare up. I am almost certain that is not a dental issue -

what can I do to ease the pain? Should I see a dr or wait a few days?
I should mention that I take zyrtec daily and started psuedophedrine a couple days ago.

Could it be my nerve is enflamed? Or the sublingual gland is swollen?

Brief Answer:
Yes, please see a doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

In this location a lump is usually an enlarged lymph node. Nodes get enlarged due to an infection. If you are certain you have had some ear infection, this can be just another sign of this infection. As from ear to brain is very close, any infection in this area should not be ignored, otherwise it can turn into some brain infection.

Yes, you should see a doctor. Antibiotic is strongly advisable. Please do not wait.

Allergy can have some impact to this inflammation.

To ease the pain, you XXXXXXX try Ibuprohpen or Diclophenac.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Thank you -
I went to the dr on Friday and get on antibiotics. But the dr wasn't sure what this is. She said it couldn't be from sinus/ear issues as my ear is clear and not infected. She felt it was a dental issue - though I am almost certain it is not. I will be going to the dentist tomorrow to confirm.

On saturday the lump got bigger and and now it is getting hard. It is hot to the touch, which i think indicates infection. I'm still baffled as to what this could be. And how long before the antibiotics (amoxicillin) kick in? I also have less pain today than yesterday. I haven't taken any pain pills or ibuprofen today.

Any other thoughts of what this could be?

Thank you

Please attach a photo if its possible.

Detailed Answer:
Can you please attach a photo of it?

From your description, it is some kind of infection indeed. And it does not have to be a lymph node. Especially that lymph nodes do not get hot to the touch and tender.
It may be an infected sebaceus cyst. Its a benign lesion, however when infected can cause pain, redness and swelling. Antibiotic may work on it, but it does not have to. Especially if it is filled with pus. Amoxicillin should give some effect after a day or two.

Regards.

Thank you for your help. I went to the dentist and it was indeed an abscess. They mentioned that I did not have any mouth pain because my nerve is dead in that tooth. I started the root canal process and am feeling much better and happy to have a resolution in sight.
