What Causes Painful Burning Sensation In The Head Along With Neck Pain?

default
Posted on Fri, 7 Jul 2017
Question: My name is XXXX. I'm 45 years old female. Currently live in Manitoba, Canada.
I'm having severe burning sensation and pain in my head from the last 2 months. Also, there is pain (streched) in my neck. I also feel streched eyes.

I cannot eat due to this pain and have started feeling very weak. Simetimes, my blood pressure goes very high ( 175/105) with very high pulse rate of more than 100. At the same time my hands get extremely cold. I feel shivering in my body, especially stomach.

I had my gall bladder removed due to stones around 2 months ago. Although, I had blood pressure issues before, but this headache with burning sensation started after the surgery.

I have my head ct scan done with everything good. I'm going to have my head mri scan in 3 days but I feel my problem may be concerned with my stomach, especially the gal bladder surgery.

I'm taking folloing medications:
Amlodipine Besylate 2.5mg Tab - 1 every morning

Topiramate 25mg Tab - 1 tab Twice daily

Levothyroxine Sodium 25 mcg - 1 every morning

Rebeprazole Sodium 20 mg Tab - 1 every morning

Lorazepam 1 mg Tab - when needed ( only took three times in one month but had to take twice in last 3 days due to high blood pressure and anxiety)

I'll greatly appreciate your specialist advice to help me relieve from this pain and weakness.

Thanks very much,
XXXX

Tension headache(Classical presentation).

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking your query on HealthcareMagic.
Have gone through your details and i appreciate your concerns.

As per your query answers are-

"I'm having severe burning sensation and pain in my head from the last 2 months. Also, there is pain (streched) in my neck. I also feel streched eyes"-

Very classical history typical of tension headache(a variety of headache very common in middle aged females.Tension headaches are caused by muscle contractions in the head and neck regions. A variety of foods, activities, and stressors can cause these types of contractions.Tension headaches are dull pain, tightness, or pressure around your forehead or the back of your head and neck. Some patients complain it feels like a clamp squeezing the skull.Their cause is unknown but thought to be due to the contraction of the muscles covering the skull. Tension headaches usually occur because of physical or emotional stress(surgery) placed on the body. Symptoms of a tension headache include pain which is described as “tightness” that begins in the back of the head and upper neck and head.

Your are having tell tale signs of Tension headache.Fluctuation of blood pressure is because of emotional stress and anxiety.Anxiety stimulates the autonomous nervous sytem causing blood pressure to shoot up.

"Simetimes, my blood pressure goes very high ( 175/105) with very high pulse rate of more than 100. At the same time my hands get extremely cold. I feel shivering in my body, especially stomach."-Classical feature of hyperactivity of autonomous nervous system.

Surgery was a physical trigger to these attacks.
Don't worry MRI would also be normal. Use of MRI is just to rule out any lesion in brain.

Topiramate is of no use in your case.

You should be given an anti inflammatory like Naproxen along with muscle relaxant.
Instead of lorazepam sos Clonazepam 0.5mg should be given daily initially for 2-3 months.
If stil not relieved an antidepressant such as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). SSRIs can stabilize your brain’s levels of serotonin and can help you cope with stress.

Take my words its not gastric. You are having classical signs of Tension Headache. Please discuss suggestions with your Neurologist.

Hope i was helpful.
