What Causes Painful Achilles Tendon?

Posted on Wed, 24 May 2017
Question: Dear Doctor: I am experiencing fairly acute Achilles Tendon pain. It is above the ankle, and at the bottom of the calf. Is it possible that I am about to rupture it? Does it ever warn you, or does it just rupture? Thanks, XXXXXXX XXXX.

I am experiencing fairly acute pain in the Achilles tendon area. The pain seems to be coming from above the ankle along the back of the leg. It is also at the lower calf muscle area. Is this an indication of a possible rupture. Is there ever a warning that it's going to rupture, or does it just rupture?

Brief Answer:
Spontaneous rupture is rare!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for contacting us at HealthcareMagic.

I have reviewed your information fully and let me inform you that this is not suggestive of imminent Achille’s tendon rupture. Tendons often rupture when great for his exerted especially in athletes. With elderly, this might be possible when you take certain medications such as Ciprofloxacin.

I will suggest that you avoid excessive exercise at this time. Also, drink much water and if you are on any medication for any specific conditions, please report them to me for review and more insights.

I hope this addresses your query fully. I wish you well and feel free to follow up with me if need be.

Kind regards

Hi, thanks for getting back with the details,

None of these medications affect tendons. I’d suggest that you apply above-suggested measures and keep me updated with your progress.

As a reminder:

1. Avoid strenuous and excessive exercise especially running and jumping.
2. Put on comfortable footwear...Flat heels
3. Rest is highly advised as well.
