What Causes Pain Under The Breast?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 May 2014
Question: hi dr. I have been having a pain under my left breast to the side along with some swelling for a while now. I have had a full cardiac workup to make sure that isn't the problem and also had a CT scan and nothing has showed up. over the last few days the pain has gotten a lot more severe and u can see swelling and redness on the skin it seems like this is either some kind of lump (lipoma) that got irritated or maybe just a very inflamed muscle from poking at it and trying to see what it was. to be more clear it's located to the left of the breast about halfway down and somewhat underneath it as well. I also get some pain in my back about the same spot which is leading me to think it is a muscle issue I'm just curious on professional input with any suggestions on what to do I just don't want to go to the hospital to have them tell me to go to my doctor because it's nothing serious which is what happened last time then they did the ct scan

Brief Answer:
can be costo-chondritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and elucidate history.

IT is good that the CT scan and Cardiac check-up are normal and hence ruled-out.

The most probable reason I can think of with your history and findings you noted is:
Costo-chondritis along with the muscle swelling you suspected correctly. There is a local pain, swelling, redness and tenderness.

The back-pain can be a ''referred'' one.

The simple treatment of anti-inflammatory medicines like Ibuprofen or Diclofenac, (whichever suits you) in a proper 8 hourly doses for about 5 days should solve your problem. You may apply local rubrafacient (increases local warmth) ointment, rest to the part ( use the upper limb least possible), avoid any movement or work which gives strain on this part will help to solve your problem.

Please observe there is no local rash-like line on the affected side as one gets on herpes ( easily missed).

I hope this helps you and feel free to ask if you have further queries.

Wish you an early recovery.
