What Causes Pain In Wrist?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Apr 2014
Question: This past week I have been having problems with my right wrist. The pain is located on the pinky side of my wrist. It is the bigger bone on that side of my wrist that hurts and I also have some pain just above and just below the bone. My hand is not numb and doesn’t feel like it is asleep. When I try to do certain things like turn a door knob it is a sharp pain and my hand is simply to weak to open the door. I don’t remember injuring my wrist. I don’t know what to think about it or what I should do. I’ve been taking Aleve without much relief. What could possibly be causing the problem? Should I use a splint? Any help you can give will be appreciated. Note: I don’t have insurance and it would be difficult for me to pay for a dr visit and xrays.

Brief Answer: Splint will help along with hot water fomentation Detailed Answer: Hi Thanks for your query. After going through you problem and being diabetic along with other medical condition it is most likely ligament injury (ulna collateral ligament) that is present on the pinky finger site at wrist. This can happen sometimes without any obvious trauma. Ligament connects all the small wrist bones to each other. Ligaments also connect the bones of the wrist with the radius, ulna, and metacarpal bones. These ligaments are important in balancing the movement of all of the wrist bones. My advice would be wear a wrist splint/band for few weeks, take hot water fomentation and then do the gentle wrist exercise. Hot water will make the tissue flexible. You may take ultracet and Trypsin to reduce pain and swelling along with local pain killer spray. These are prescription drugs and you may have to contact your local doctor. If you have further query I shall be glad to answer. Take care and wish you good health. Regards Dr.chugh, Orthopaedic surgeon
