What Causes Pain In Toe Without Any History Of Injury In The Area?

default
Posted on Thu, 22 May 2014
Question: I am experiencing a sharp pain in my toe. It is the second to the last toe. I have had surgery to correct hammer toe; I know that this pain is totally different. It is periodic...occurring when I have been on my feet for a period of time. (from 30 minutes to a couple of hours). The severity of the pain ranges from a quick stabbing pain to stabbing pain that is quite excruciating and can last for a couple of minutes. I really don't want it to get worse. Any idea what it is. (BTW, I am in great health and am 62 years old)

Brief Answer:
Due to joint inflammation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the toe without any history of injury in the area is likely to be due to an inflammation in the joint.
It can happen when there are increased uric acid levels in the blood and the uric acid crystals start depositing in the joint capsules causing the joint inflammation.
It can happen due to decreased excretion of urates by kidney, dietary changes or due to genetic predisposition.
It is associated with consumption of alcohol, seafood and meat.
Taking a diet rich in vitamin C, dairy products and coffee is likely to help in improvement of symptoms.
Drink plenty of water daily to help the kidneys clear the uric acid. Reducing meat intake will also help. If it is causing you severe pain, you can seek medical help and ask your doctor to prescribe you some analgesics and specific medicines which increase the uric acid excretion from the kidneys.
Taking mild anti inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen will be helpful.
I hope this answers your query.
