What Causes Pain In Thighs And Groin Area?

default
Posted on Tue, 31 May 2016
Question: Mild pain in thigh/groin area, sometimes across top groin area above penis, then usually down in crevice of thigh - feels tight, no swelling of testicles or no other signs. The mild pain has come and gone for a few months, started with pain in lower thigh/groin area where leg and pelvic area come together. Once in awhile now there is mild pain in buttocks (middle to upper buttocks area). Hot bath relaxes pain, tylenol or aspirin seem to take care of it as well. Mainly when sitting or laying is when pain is felt more often than when standing. What could be causing this pain and should I be concerned it is something serious? I thought if it was serious there would be more symptoms by now? I just don't understand why I have the mild pain off and on in the thigh/groin region.

Undiagnosed Pain in Groin/Thigh and buttocks -Under Evaluation !!

Detailed Answer:
Brief Ans-Undiagnosed Pain in Groin/Thigh and buttocks -Under Evaluation !!

Hi,Dear!! Thanks for your query to HCM.
Read and reviewed the facts of your query in context to the recurring pain in Groin /thigh with pain in buttocks.

Most Important fact of your story is the -Mild pain in thigh/ groin are above penis and in crevice of thigh, which feels tight.
Relief is from hot bath / and pain killers / comes off and on.
Pain is mainly in sitting/ or laying and not while standing.
Started as mild pain in buttocks-middle to upper buttocks.

Based on these facts-

Pain is varying from suprapubic / groin / upper thigh and buttocks areas,is mild and is recurring and is relieved by painkillers in few days time.

Being teacher with a sedentary job, this is disturbing and worrying you -as if it could be a sign of a upcoming serious health problem?

My Opinion-
Pain is recurring over last few months and is of intermittent nature and is not of serious nature to cause you to go for any investigation like -CT / MRI of the pelvis - as Yet.

Differrential Diagnosis and -Cause of this pain could be-
-Subclinical Mild Colitis with Constipation-
-or could be-Inguinal-Herniation in process of early development
or could be - from-Musculoskeletal recurring irritating- component in the area.

Please Update More information as follows-

Get more information -as whether the pain increases with coughing ? or with disturbed bowel movements?

Does the pain recur with period of -disturbed bowel movements / or with Constipation and Gases?

Do you have any Constipation with anal cause with gaseous problem?

Does is it occur after partying with spicy /non-veg food?

Do you frequently go for outside / hotel / or street fast food ?

Any problem in lower abdomen with gases and mild pain- accompanied with periods of stress / dietary change as above?

How frequently you take tea/coffee?

What is the daily water intake of yours?

Are you overweight for your height ? what is weight and height Of yours?

Have you undergone any inguinal surgery lately?

Clinical Opinion-

Pain being of few months origin and is of obscure nature,I would need further information as asked above

I would suggest- USG study report of the ilio-inguinal and supra-pubic region and scrotal region- to evaluate hidden possibilities of -

Varicocele / or Inguinal Herniation in early stage of its development.

-Clinical evaluation from -Surgeon- as the region of pain is in the -Inguinal / suprapubic/and upper thigh and buttocks.

Other Possibilities- which I would rule out and verify would be-
Meralgia Paraesthetica- Lateral Femoral Cuataneous Nerve Compression /
Genitofemoral / Or Ilio-inguinal Neuralgia caused due to nerve entrapment syndromes.

Please update on the above information asked from you.
Welcome for any further query in this regard.

I would reply exactly to pinpoint the cause in your case during next session.

Brief Answer:
Mostly Inguinal hernia !!

Detailed Answer:
Brief Ans-Mostly Inguinal hernia !!

Hi Dear !! Thanks for the exhaustive updates.

Considering the updated facts and reviewing the last reply and opinion in context to these updates, Your health issues is mostly from- Inguinal Hernia in early development process, with Genitofemoral and Iliohypogastric nerve compression due to the hernia development.

In this situation-Clinically it would be very difficult to have the classical cough reflex and bulge pope out on coughing.

Do's for fixing the diagnosis-

Surgeons Consultation with repeated 6 weekly follow up check ups with repeated USG studies of the InguinoScrotal Areas would fix the diagnostic challenge in your case.
USG study of the Inguinal Area with repeated followup studies in time to come for next 3-6 mths time.
If found early, Hernia repair surgery would resolve your health issues.

You need to rule out other causes of such symptom complex- like-
Genitofemoral / or IlioHypogastric Neuralgia from compression syndrome
Meralgia paresthetica due to obesity causing compression of Lateral Cuataneous Femoral Nerve of thigh.

Hope this reply would help you to plan further investigation and followup for the right treatment planning in your case.

Welcome for any further query in this regard.

So what is in simple to understand terms my best course of action for the time if it is an inguinal hernia issue?

I feel like that is what it is but I don't know what would have caused it? I have the pain in the middle of the buttocks area and down each crevice of leg in thigh/groin region.

Yesterday while laying on my belly stretched across floor coloring with my daughter i got a sharp pain for a few seconds on the top/inside area of my leg/lower right side abs that didn't go away till I sat up for a few seconds. That's when I really thought it was the beginning of an inguinal hernia... but does it take months to cause symptoms like this?

Brief Answer:
Mostly Right Inguinal Hernia...To confirm it... get USG done!!

Detailed Answer:
Brief Ans-Mostly Right Inguinal Hernia...To confirm get USG done!!

Hi Dear,Thanks for the updates confirming the possibility of hernia.
Its really difficult to guess from complaints like this interaction.
It would be nice if you send the picture of the affected area.

The aggravation of pain on laying on the belly, verifies partly this possibility.
But as suggested earlier you need to have second opinion with Surgeon in your area there, who would physically examine with Cough sign and with Valsalva's maneuver(forcing the air out of Lungs/ Chest, against the closed throat outlet -in layman's terms).

Do's to come out of this perplexing health issue-
USG of the inguinoscrotal area would confirm the possibility of hernia.
Other causes need to be ruled out in your case-as -Meralgia Paraesthetica -with compressed Lateral Cutaneous Femoral Nerve(LCFN) / or Genitofemoral and IlioHypogastric Nerve Compression.

Cause of this Inguinal Hernia-
1-Obesity with Increased Intra-abdominal Pressures
2-Sedentary Job with weakly built abdominal muscles
3-Lack of Exercise

Q-Does it take Months to cause symptoms like this?
Ans-Depending on the strength of the abdominal muscles and variation of your physical activity, it could take more time than this in few cases.
Being sedentary worker with less physical activity, a slow progress like this is expected.
But as of now, You can verify and confirm its possibility by USG -a real time scan which would give the exact status of this problem.

Hope this reply helped you to find out the possible cause of the health issue you have.
This reply has helped you to research out the entity which you had, and could not get the reply with other 3 doctors online.

With this interaction You could atleast get the idea as to -how to go ahead to deal with this intriguing health complaint of your's.

Welcome for any further query in this regard.

Few pleasing comments of yours about your experience to rate this interactive service, would boost the morale of the incoming patients at HCM.

My last question for you and I will review with positive remarks. I have a doctors appt. for Apr 4th to find out what is going on...but for today the pain seems only in upper buttocks area with an off and on slight issue in thigh/groin region.

Is it common for the hernia to cause pain in the buttocks muscles like this?

What is a USG scan? I will ask about it but don't know what it is called. Can you give me the name or what to call it please?

Brief Answer:
Your Case Needs Review after USG n CT Study ....!!

Detailed Answer:
Brief Ans-Your Case Needs Review after USG n CT Study ....!!

Hi Dear !! Thanks for your update query with current status.
In view of the Current pain in upper buttock area with off and on mild pain in thigh / groin region, your case is complex until fixed with physical examination and reassessment after CT / MRI study and USG scan of the groin and pelvic region.

Its very difficult to comment on the complaints only.

Possibilities move from Meralgia paraesthetica- which would give pain in groin / upper buttocks and is from entrapment of Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve Syndrome. Also Lumbar-L1/L2 compression with herniated disc also needs to be kept in mind and needs to be ruled out in revaluating your health concerns.
The inguinal herniation in early stages / or with Right Varicocle in progression needs to be kept in mind which could be fixed with USG scan(Ultra-Sound Sonography Scan) and Colour Doppler Study..

Hope with this discussion till now- in view of the current context of upper buttock pain currently would help you to plan proper treatment with the doctors there attending on you.

Welcome for any further query in this regard.
Feel free to ask more query to resolve this challenging health issue, Which I would love to help you to the best of My expertise and knowledge.

Wishing healthy life !!
