What Causes Pain In The Calf Muscles While On Livalo?

default
Posted on Thu, 23 Feb 2017
Question: I am currently taking Livalo for high cholesterol. Yesterday I went to the physician and my Total Cholesterol was 210 so he increased my dose from 15 mg on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to now taking it four days a week. I am also on Meloxicam for arthritis. Since Christmas, I have been seeing a physical therapist for extreme sciatic nerve pain, and calf/arch pain. I'm now wondering if the Livalo is causing all of the pain and if, without it, maybe I wouldn't even need the Meloxicam. Unfortunately, my high cholesterol is mostly genetic from both of my parents although no one in the family has ever had heart issues. Can I just stop taking all of it and see what happens?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query.
Livalo like other statins can produce muscular aches. Please check the blood for CPK and if it is elevated, you should stop the Livalo.
Do you have the lipid profile before you started Livalo? If so, please let me know so that I may be able to advise you on the risk of stopping Livalo. Your levels may go back to the same on stopping Livalo.
Since you do not have diabetes and there is no family history of a heart attack, the current levels are not dangerous and do not cause a significantly high risk for heart attack or stroke.

Take care
