What Causes Pain In Stomach While Standing?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Jul 2015
Question: I have been having this wierd pain in my stomach that comes on after standing or being on my feet for about 15 or 20 minutes. It can be pretty painful. It almost feels like pressure and my stomach starts to feel a little swollen. As soon as I sit down it goes away but will come back after being on my feet for a awhile. The only way I dont feel it is by laying down or sitting. It has been going on now for a couple of months. What is it? What can I do to help it? And who should I see about this? A gastro?

Brief Answer:
Sounds like a cardiac problem instead of a gastro related problem

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your query.

The symptoms of the query are quite suggestive of a possible cardiac lesion.
The cardiac problems can often present as stomach pain.
It is called as referred pain.

Think about it.
The heart has to pump more when you are standing and walking.
when you sit, heart relaxes.
So its likely that this is a cardiac problem.

I would suggest meeting a cardiologist instead of gastrenterologist.
Test with a EKG, and TMT as soon as possible.
Meanwhile monotrate prescription from a local practitioner should be sought.
I hope the response helps you.

Best of luck.

Should I go ahead and make appointments with both? Ive had some pretty bad indigestion too over the past year. I had a CT scan of my heart and lungs several months ago and they said my heart looked great! When I get the pain it almost feels like something is pushing on my stomach and lower back with bloatedness and or tearing feeling... Its so hard to describe

Brief Answer:
Meet both

Detailed Answer:
Hi, I don't think that there is any harm in meeting up with the 2 doctors. CT scan is not enough for what we are looking for. Since I cannot examine you, I am only suggesting possible diagnosis that should be ruled out. And I feel ruling out cardiac condition should be done. I hope that the information contained in this message will be able to help you find the best solution for your problem. Best of luck. Dr Mittal

Brief Answer:
Suggestions

Detailed Answer:
the heart affects the stomach by a phenomenon called as referred pain. the nerve supply is same to heart and stomach. so when heart sends signals to brain it reads it wrong as coming from stomach.

I would suggest starting Omeprazole 20 mg once daily at breakfast and clopitab 75 mg at bedtime till you meet the doctor.

I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information contained in this message will be able to help you find the best solution for your problem. Best of luck. Dr Mittal.
