What Causes Pain In Right Side And Late Periods?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Jun 2014
Question: Hi, I'm a 33 year old female. I hAve never been pregnant/given birth. My period is late (I'm on day 38 of my cycle). For the last 7 days I've had a pain on my right side. It seems to be based at my hip but the pain radiates up my back to my shoulder blades and down to my pelvis and, from time to time, I have pain to the front of my abdomen. Again, this is on the right. In general, the pain is continuous and not sharp. At the moment, however, it is burning just above my hip at the flank. I do not have a temperature (98.3 any time I've checked) nor do I have nausea or diarrhea. From time to time, I get a winded sensation - not out of breath, it feels as though I've been punched in the stomach. Is this some sort of ovulation pain or something else?

Brief Answer:
Not due to ovulation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Since your periods are overdue by 8-10 days the pain that you are having is not due to ovulation. This can be related to an ectopic pregnancy.
You first need to do a urine test for pregnancy using the kits available at all the pharmacies. In case the pregnancy test is negative then further evaluation like ultrasound scan will help in detecting the cause of pain.
Do consult your gynecologist for necessary investigations. You can do a hot fomentation in the area of pain for symptomatic relief. Avoid taking any pain killers till proper cause is detected.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.
