What Causes Pain In Left Side Of Abdomen Inspite Of Having Herniated Disc?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 May 2014
Question: Hi, I just went through a physial last week and all blood results perfect. I am a 41 year old female and have had herniated disc in L5S1 for over 20 years with minimal interferance in my life. I have been constipated last couple of days and taken dulcolax which has cleared me out. But it has been two days that I have had a pain on the left side of my abdomen (not upper, not lower) just adjacent left to belly button that radiates to my back (same exact area front to back) near my spine where my herniated I guess would be. Sometimes I feel like it could have been the bowel movement issue since the pain comes and goes. Isnt severe but it is slight pain, like a 3 from 1 out of 10. So uncomfortable lets say. I am worried about it being anything but muscular. I am traveling today but I am very conscious of my physical symptoms so it just stresses me even more. I have a BenGay pad on my back but nothing helps the front end. I am thinking diverticulitis, my ovaries? (date of LMP was 4/11) who knows????

Brief Answer:
could be pancreatitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to HCM.

The site and type of pain as described by you i.e. pain near the belly button going to the back, is usually associated with pancreatitis.

Your herniated disc are much lower, and so are your ovaries and diverticulitis pain.

Another possibility for this pain could be gastritis or renal stones.

But as you are traveling today, so I would suggest that you take a Proton Pump Inhibitor like tablet omeprazole or pantaprazole on empty stomach followed by a painkiller after half an hour with some food.

But when you get opportunity, I would suggest that you get an ultrasound of your abdomen to look at your pancreas and kidneys and a serum lipase and amylase test, for pancreatitis.

Further definitive management will depend upon reaching a diagnosis based upon the above results.

Hope, I have been helpful.
