What Causes Pain In Left Lower Rib Area During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Jul 2014
Question: Hello doctor,
Im 24 weeks pregnant and since my 4th month I started having pain in my left side lower rib area(in the back) when I lye down or sit for a long time.Doctor said its due to pregnancy and nothing can be done.Past weeks the pain is slightly more on both sides(specifically left side) and I hardly sleep as I have to switch sides very often.
I feel the pain only when I lye down on the sides.Since I cant sleep on my back I don't know how to manage sleep.i tried using pillows and massages but its only a temporary relief.Im also taking calcium iron tablets, milk daily.
Kindly suggest me how to reduce the pain and any exercises.the pain is not sharp rather a pressure as if the weight is shifting to one side when I lye on the side.

Brief Answer:
Renal stones, acidity or costochondritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I read your query and I understand your concerns.

Following is my reply:

1) This sound like renal colic with probably renal stones. An ultrasound scan will be able to detect this.

2) If ultrasound scan is done and shows no stones in kidney or ureter it could possibly be costochonditis or just simple gastritis.

3) I suggest you take antacid medicines everyday in morning ( with a doctor's prescription ) and see if it can make a difference as such symptoms are common in gastritis ( acidity).

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Regards,
Dr. Mahesh Koregol
